On Thursday after work, I went to the local Saddle Club and got a load of dirt from their huge pile of what-used-to-be-manure-and-now-is-gorgeous-black-dirt.
(This may not sound exciting. But my thoughts are so consumed these days with growing plants and building garden beds that to me dirt is not only exciting, it's beautiful and picture-worthy.)
(Here's where I might make a 'starved for entertainment' jab at myself. But this IS my entertainment. Nothing thrills me more these days than to plant stuff and figure out/remember the various properties of the plants. It's a pretty awesome way to be entertained.)
The Saddle Club is only about half a mile away. But the truck was so weighed down that I felt like it was going to rear back on its haunches and do something crazy...so I didn't go over 15 mph on the way home. I'm sure it irritated the people who got stuck behind me. XD
Oh! That's the infamous tire behind it! It's from a tractor of some kind--and we actually got it for free, because the business that had it would have had to pay to have it taken away. And people wanting to take excess stuff is good around here. :p
It took about 1/3 of a load to fill it (my brother and I had already covered the bottom of the tire with dirt from our own manure heap), and my abs/back are aching today. I love that feeling.
There they are! Aren't they gorgeous? :3
A couple of the plants already had some berries on it when I bought them...but after they ripen I'll be picking off any blossoms so that the energy of the plant will go into the root system and growing. It's basic policy for gardening to not allow perennial plants and trees to produce fruit for at least the first year--the crop is pretty small/lousy and the growth is much better spent towards the plant.
Oh yes, and Javert helped too.
I have a ton of pictures and ideas for posts...but instead of swamping the interwebs I'll try to space it out over the next few days. ;) Have a great weekend, internet peoples!
